Tonight was essentially the actualization of a lot of the dreams I had when I first started listening to Japanese music. Just the ability for you to see a band that you love so much and has become an absolute inspiration for you.

Such a thing sounds simple to anyone else, but to those who listen to foreign music or who generally listen to bands who don’t tour, who have disbanded, etc., that is something that seems near impossible. It’s as if there’s an energy in you that needs to be expelled out of your system, and to not be able to do such a thing feels like an eternal longing that you can never quite let go of.

Basically, thanks to Steven Tanaka and his event, Next Music From Tokyo, I got to experience that feeling seeing group_inou and Zazen Boys, although not frequently on my playlist as much as Number Girl, Mukai’s aesthetic and consistent aim for experimentation and progression is something that I have always admired.

A lot of concerts that I’ve been to where foreign bands tour, there still seems to be a strange lack of energy despite the feelings involved with getting that chance. I suppose because typically these bands are the type that you know you will see again, so the excitement is lacking. There is nothing wrong about Boris… Melt Banana… Acid Mother’s Temple… even Dir en Grey. But they make their rounds as much as any American act. One would hardly even shed a tear of remorse for having not caught another United States go around.

Maybe that’s why the energy was so absolutely positive tonight at Next Music. The shy, closeted music listeners finally getting that chance they never thought possible. Yelling to words you don’t know and not letting a single crowdsurfer fall on their back.

Speaking of which, just to deviate from the serious tone of this and to discuss my own personal experience during the show, it was my first time crowdsurfing. I knew it had to be done because when again would I ever get the chance to at a group_inou concert? Once their expected final bout, MAYBE, came on, my friends lifted me up and everyone kept me up for the entirety of the song (or nearly that, I had gotten kicked out and pushed by a bouncer and had been told to go back to California, but fortunately let back in for Zazen Boys) and it was complete bliss. I tried to yell out every word I could and even got in some cooking. The fact that people recognized how much I was enjoying myself in that moment and kept me up even as I was almost let down several times displayed a lot of unity in that crowd for me, everyone just wanted each other to have as much fun as possible.

Zazen Boys were equally as amazing. To some they can essentially be regarded as a more technical Number Girl, and their live shows really display it. The band is extremely tight, and Mukai guides his bandmates as a conductor would a classical orchestra. Still and focused at times, but equally possessing so much energy. Mukai spoke to the crowd briefly at moments about his music, mostly noting how he doesn’t even know what his songs about, and how Japanese listeners often ask him “what are you fucking talking about.” Mukai finished two beers during the set. Mukai has to always have his beer.

This was an unforgettable experience. They’re playing again tomorrow, and as much as I want go in a way, I don’t have to. The experience was perfect, even getting kicked out I was perfectly fine with because I have too many memories of what was surprisingly brief, but forever memorable. To experience it again would only cheapen what everything was tonight.

I hope I’m here for next year’s Next Music From Tokyo.
